SpeakerProfessor Tao Cheng -- Founding Director of the UCL SpaceTimeLab and a leading figure in the development of SpaceTimeAI and emerging GeoAI foundation models. She also serves as Theme Lead for SpaceTimeAI for Sustainable Cities at the Alan Turing Institute and as a member of the College of Experts at the UK Department for Transport. Her work advances the integration of AI, geospatial data, and urban systems to address major societal challenges in mobility, public safety, and infrastructure resilience.

Abstract: As cities confront increasing pressures from rapid urbanisation and climate change, there is a growing need for new forms of urban intelligence to support strategic and real-time decision-making. This talk presents recent advances in SpaceTimeAI, integrating artificial intelligence with spatio-temporal data to better understand and manage complex urban systems.Drawing on large-scale applications in mobility, public safety, and infrastructure resilience, it demonstrates how data-driven approaches can move cities from reactive management towards more anticipatory and adaptive systems. Building on this foundation, the talk introduces an emerging frontier: spatio-temporal foundation models (GeoFMs). These models represent a step change in spatial intelligence, moving beyond task-specific analytics towards more generalisable and scalable AI systems that embed geographic knowledge and learn from diverse urban data sources. Positioning SpaceTimeAI as a strategic capability, the talk outlines how next-generation spatial intelligence can support sustainable, resilient, and future-ready cities, particularly in high-density urban contexts.

Whether you’re a long-time member or new to AGILE, this is a great chance to connect, learn, and contribute to the future of GIScience in Europe and beyond.
